Hamilton to Honour Local Soldier Killed in Afghanistan

The city of Hamilton is renaming a West Mountain park in honour of a local fallen soldier. Olympic Park will be renamed in honour of Mark Anthony Graham. Graham was killed in action on September 4th, 2006, while serving our country in Afghanistan. The dedication ceremony will be held at the park tomorrow night at 6:00pm.

Provincial Funds for Port Dover

The province is investing in revitalizing Port Dover's downtown. Norfolk County, the Port Dover Enhancement Association and the Port Dover Board of Trade are working together on a planning strategy to bring new life to the local business environment. Ontario is announcing $135,000 through the Rural Economic Development Program. This will help to create additional jobs in the area, enhance the streetscape and increase pedestrian traffic.

Wait Times Not Improving at Local Hospitals

If you need medical care in the local area, be prepared to wait. For the second fiscal year in a row, hospitals across Haldimand, Hamilton and Brant are not meeting wait time targets. The LHIN's annual report says these hospitals are taking too long to provide surgeries, imaging, emergency and long-term care. Health Minister Deb Matthews says the LHIN system is critical for reducing wait times, while the Ontario Progressive Conservatives say the statistics just prove the networks don't work and should be eliminated.

Lakescape Meetings in Haldimand

Haldimand County is looking for ways to improve the area's lakeshore. They held a lakescape open house yesterday at the Dunnville arena. The open house gave the public an opportunity to express their wants and needs for the future of the lakeshore. Subjects such as improved signage, building recreational facilities and promoting tourism were all high on the list of their desires. In case you missed the first one, there will be another lakescape meeting tonight at the Cayuga Administration Building.

Man Shot by Police Recovering in Hamilton Hospital

A man is recovering in a Hamilton hospital after being shot by police. Provincial police in Wellington County went to a home in Mount Forest on Tuesday afternoon. They were to arrest a man for uttering threats. The Special Investigations Unit says the 21-year-old was shot by police. Two officers were also taken to hospital.

Man Arrested in Hamilton Cab Driver Robbery

A Hamilton man has been arrested after an overnight cab driver robbery. Police say a man asked a cab driver to take him to a plaza on Mount Albion Road last night. Before getting to the destination, the man told the driver to turn down a side street and stop the car. Police say the man grabbed the cab driver by the neck and demanded his belongings. He left the cab and was arrested a short time later. The 31-year-old is charged with robbery and breach of probation.

Gas Station Robbery in Hamilton

Police are investigating an armed gas station robbery in Hamilton. Police say two men went into the Shell gas station on Fennell Avenue East early this morning and demanded cash from the clerk at gunpoint. The two men fled with the cash and the clerk was not injured. Police are looking for two suspects and are asking any witnesses to come forward.

West Harbour is Not Viable for Hamilton's Pan Am Stadium

There may be a light at the tunnel for Hamilton's Pan Am Stadium. The Tiger-Cats have rejoined discussions and the city will have a final decision by September 15th. The city is now looking at alternate locations to host the Pan-Am Games, Ti-Cats and community events. The area of Longwood and Aberdeen in Hamilton's west end is now being seen as a possible front runner. Although the West Harbor may not be viable for a stadium, the city will continue to restore the area.

Local Minors Get Probation for Burying a Stillborn Baby

Two local minors are on probation after hiding the body of a baby. A boy and girl pleaded guilty to the charges after the girl gave birth to a stillborn last fall. The girl then turned to the child's father for help. The pair had not told their parents about the pregnancy and decided to bury the baby in the woods near the girl's home in Norfolk. Police were called in after someone overheard their plan. They each face a 15-month probation term.
