Anglicans in Moosonee Have New Bishop
Wednesday, 25 August 2010 10:18
Local Anglicans have a new Bishop in Tom Corston. Corston, who has been serving as the priest at the Anglican Epiphany parish in Sudbury, became the new Bishop of Moosonee on Tuesday, July 5. In a generous gesture between the two denominations, Roman Catholics in Timmins welcomed the Anglicans to their St. Anthony’s Cathedral for the Consecration Service which was attended by Anglican bishops from across the country including the national Primate, Archbishop Fred Hiltz. Corston then led a procession from St. Anthony’s to the Anglican’s own St. Matthew’s Cathedral where he was installed as the Moosonee Bishop. Corston was born in Chapleau, is a member of the Fox Lake Cree First Nation, and is on the Anglican’s national aboriginal council. In the Diocese of Moosonee, he has served in parishes in Foleyet, Longlac, South Porcupine, Schumacher, Iroquois Falls and Matheson. He served in Fredericton and Chatham, N.B., before moving to Sault Ste. Marie and then Sudbury. The Anglican Diocese of Moosonee extends from Geraldton in the west to Mistissini, Quebec, in the east, and from Kashechewan and Chisasibi in the north to Chapleau and Gogama in the south. Corston succeeds Archbishop Caleb Lawrence who was the Bishop of Moosonee for thirty years. Bishop Corston is now making the rounds of his new Diocese and will be in Kapuskasing in early September at St. Mark’s Church.
