NDP Stands by FedNor Cuts Claim

The New Democrats are standing by the claim that the FedNor budget is being slashed. Charlie Angus, the MP for Timmins –James Bay, says the budget is being reduced by 18 percent. He says the budget will go from $81-million to $60 million in two years from now and about 20 people will lose their jobs. FedNor boss Tony Clement insists he's not cutting the budget and adds the NDP is intentionally misleading the north about the issue.

12th Annual Northern College Traditional Powwow This Weekend

The 12th annual traditional powwow at Northern College’s Porcupine Campus gets underway this weekend. This year’s theme is Honouring our Mother Earth. The celebration showcases local performances, and Aboriginal traditions including drumming, dancing, singing and friendship. Celebrations get underway at noon on Saturday with the Grand Entry.

 

Timmins Robotics Team Tops Rookies in Mississauga Competition

A solid gold showing for Timmins High’s ‘Gold Diggers’ at their first ever robotics competition in Mississauga. Out of 45 teams in the competition the team, along with robot ‘Nugget’, placed 13th overall, but brought home first place out of 13 rookie teams. The team also won the Rookie Inspiration Award for promotion of robotics in the city. Next year the school says it hopes to attend two competitions.

 

Matheson Woman Charged in Drug Bust

A Matheson woman is facing drug-related charges after a hefty drug seizure. On Wednesday evening police stopped a pickup truck for a traffic violation in Val Gagne. Police searched the truck and seized around $9,000 dollars in pot and $20,000 in cash. The 35-year-old will appear in court to answer charges in June.

 

Northern Ontario Leadership Conference Continues

Timmins is hosting the Northern Ontario Leadership Conference. Topics of interest include the realities of doing business in Northern Ontario. The roundtable discussions will include mayors from Cochrane, Sudbury, Timmins and Kapuskasing. Making presentations at the conference include the Honorable Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development and Mines and MPP France Gelinas of Nickel Belt.This inaugural event will bring together decision makers, community builders and industry leaders from different sectors to engage in discussions, share information and continue the process of identifying how we can make Northern Ontario an even better region to call home.

 

Timmins Native Friendship Centre Holds Career Workshop

The free career workshop at Northern College's Porcupine Campus continues today and tomorrow. The Timmins Native Friendship Centre has teamed up with 10 local organizations to offer the 'Jump Start Your Career: Career Path Readiness Workshop'. The event is promoting education, resources and employment for First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples.

 

Northern College Teams Up with Queen's University to Offer New Degree

Northern College is teaming up with Queen's University in Kingston. The two have partnered to offer an accredited Mining Engineering Degree program at North College's Porcupine campus. Kimberly Woodhouse, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science says it will allow them to use innovative programming and technology to provide expanded educational opportunities where there is a pressing need for engineers.

 

Four Colleges Team Up for Mental Health Support Initiative

Northern College is teaming up with three other colleges to promote mental health and well-being. Cambrian, Canadore, Confederation and Northern have joined forces to create a pan-northern initiative called Bridging the Distance. Nearly $1-million dollars from the Ministry of Training, Colleges and University has been allotted for the project. Each college will focus on one of four areas: web portal, distance counseling, faculty and staff support and peer support and will implement specific objectives in order to provide support and reduce stigma around mental health issues.

 

Students Off to Waterloo for Skills Canada Competition

Timmins students have got skill! Several students from Timmins High are off to Waterloo in May for the Skills Canada provincial competition. Skills Canada is a national non-profit organization that actively promotes careers in skilled trades and technologies to Canadian youth. Cody Fay nabbed first in Welding, Zach Chartier took home top prize for Electrical wiring and Ryley Hardisty will compete in cabinet making.
