Road Closure Mixup Identified as MTO Internal Miscommunication

An internal miscommunication after there was no information on the closure and condition of highways in the area last week. Roads had been closed and conditions for traveling were hazardous at best, but there was no information posted to the Ministry of Transportation's website. The only direction was to call 511 and after calling the number and wading through the various menus, there was no information. Gordan Rennie, communications officer with the MTO reported back that there was an internal miscommunication and it has been identified and rectified.
 

Timmins Councilor to Run for Provincial Consevatives

A Timmins councilor has thrown his hat into the ring for the Timmins-James Bay provincial Progressive Conservatives. Councilor Steve Black has decided to pursue provincial politics and take on incumbent NDP MPP Gilles Bisson. Black has cited the need for a strong voice at Queen’s Park to act on jobs, regional resource development and the economy in his decision to go for the nod. Black is a professional engineer and works at Xtrata. He’s been an outspoken member of Timmins City council and sits on the Mattagami Region Conservation Authority Board, the Cochrane District Social Services Administration Board and the Porcupine Health Unit’s Board to name a few. The nomination for Timmins-James Bay’s PC candidate will take place on Saturday, April 27th at 2:30pm at the Travelodge’s Conference Room 2.

 

Committee Releases Latest Flood Threat Report

A local committee is reminding residents to be prepared to protect their property from rising water levels. The upper Mattagami Water Management Committee met again this week to monitor and discuss the threat of flooding in our region. Officials say the depth and water content of snowpack is still well above average levels for this time. There still remains an increased risk of flooding in and around Timmins including Porcupine Lake, Mattagami River and Kamiskotia Lake. The committee continues to monitor the situation and release information as it becomes available.

 

Angus Talks Palliative Care in House of Commons

Our MP is speaking up on the importance of palliative care. Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus spoke in the House of Commons yesterday, urging all parties to work together.

Angus says an all-party study recently found several recommendations for a national palliative care strategy.

 

Iroquois Falls Man to Appear in Court on Firearms Charges

While Iroquois Falls OPP attended a residence following a domestic dispute call, the officers were told firearms and ammunition were improperly stored. Following the domestic dispute investigation two firearms and ammunition for both and a compound crossbow were seized as evidence. As a result a 25-year-old Iroquois Falls man faces two counts of improper storage of a firearm and is required to be in Timmins court in June.

 

OPP Says 13 People Charged in Week-Long Distracted Driving Campaign

The week long distracted driving campaign is over. South Porcupine OPP laid a total of 13 charges against drivers caught using handheld communications devices. The campaign allowed police to create public awareness and bolster driver compliance. Although the campaign is over, police continue to watch for drivers who aren’t paying attention to the road.
