Tri Sport Tournament

E-mail Print PDF

I had the pleasure of participating in the Tri Sport Tournament this past weekend.  This was put together by the executive of the Bancroft Minor Hockey Association as a fundraiser to help offset the rising costs associated with the sport.

Both men and women were invited to submit teams of 12 players, who would each be asked to compete in hockey, baseball and golf over the course of the weekend.  Both the hockey and baseball were held at the arena, and the golf was held at the Bancroft Golf Course.

I was asked by a friend to join her team....and what a team it was!  We had so much fun together!  We played well during our hockey game on Friday night.  A bit rusty, but it's August!  We were all commenting on how different it was to change from shorts to hockey equipment after coming in out of the heat outside. One girl on my team had to evict some chipmunks from her hockey bag.  They had built a nest in her shin pads while they were in storage.  My hockey bag had the familiar basement odour that several others had.  In the end, we lost our first game.  But, it's not all about winning, we had a lot of fun.

Saturday morning at 9 am, the women's teams all hit the links!  Each team was divided into four somes and because there was so many of us, we were paired up with another team and off we went.  We had a great round.  We tied with the other girls we were with, and even had a winner on our team.  One of my team mates won the Closest to the Pin challenge...beating me by a hair!

After golf, we had to hit the ice for another game of hockey.  This was by far my favorite part of the day!  During our first period I scored my very first goal!  This tournament was my first time playing in a real hockey game.  We ended up winning this game 10 - 2.  At 5 we hit the ball diamond.  Despite being hot and tired, we managed to pull off yet another win! By the end of Saturday my team was in a tie for 1st place.

Sunday morning we played our last baseball game against the team we were tied for first place with.  We ended up losing this game, but we gave it all our might! By the end of the day, we had secured 3rd place.  I was very happy to see all the winning teams donate their winnings back to Minor Hockey.  What a great way to support our kids!

Congrats to all those involved in organizing this amazing event....see you next year!!

For those of you seeking my autograph before the scouts nab me for womens hockey......have your people call my people.  :)

Down Another 3.75

E-mail Print PDF

Well I'm down another 3 3/4 pounds this past week.  Last week I hadn't lost or gained and the week previous I was down 2 pounds.  Because I missed a few meetings, it puts me at 5 and 3/4 pounds down for the month of August.  Considering I lost 6 and a 1/2 pounds for the month of July and now another 5 and 3/4 pounds for August, I guess I should be happy with the progress.

Losing weight is always a slow process but it's nice to know I have a support group like TOPS behind me.  Some members in the TOPS club make use of different programs like Curves and so forth.  TOPS isn't a weight loss program, it's a support group to help keep you in line and remind you every week or where you are and where you want to be.  If you ever want to join us, drop by the Pentecostal Church on Monday nights at 6pm for Weigh-in followed by the meeting at 7pm.  Just don't come Labour Day Monday, there's no meeting and you'll be weighing in alone.

Role Models on Game Shows?

E-mail Print PDF

I have started watching a new game show...and I was starting to really like it...until last night.

The idea of the show is that is has stunts and challenges that you can do at home.

Minute to Win It is the new game show on NBC.  All of the challenges are based on stuff you can find around the house.  The first episode that I watched, had a guy shooting elastic bands at playing cards that were held up with paper clips, rolling tennis balls into trash cans, boucing pencils into drinking glasses...you get the idea.  The trick is, you only have 60 seconds to complete each task.  You are given chance to fail as well, but as every other show goes, you are penalized if you eventually can't do the task.  There are 10 stages to go through, with the last one awarding you $1 million!!

This week is the Girls of Sumer week.  Last night was former beauty queens.  Girls who had previously been either Miss USA or Miss Universe (or both in some cases).  These girls were put through tasks and eliminated one by one.  They were each playing for a charity of their choice. They seemed to be your typical beauty queens.  Pearly white smiles, manicured nails, tiny waists and big hair. I really liked Miss New York.  She had won Miss USA back in 1995 and has since had 3 kids and she was a tough litle competitor.  Trash talking the other girls, calling them out and winning challenges.

Most of the girls seemed like total bubble heads to me.  Miss Puerta Rico cried when asked to make a row of dominoes out of empty CD cases.  I mean come on! Suck it up buttercup! Try living in the real world with a real job and then you can cry to me about how hard something really is. While I am at home up to my elbows in laundry and housework with a stack of bills on the desk and a lawn that needs to be cut...she is crying about standing CD cases on their sides so that they fall into a garbage can.  Really?  Is this worth crying over or are these girls taught to bring on tears when faced with something that is beyond their skill level.  If so, what kind of message is this sending our daughters?  Become a Barbie doll and you never have to worry about doing anything that is 'too hard'?  That's what the men are for...to do all those things we can't?  No way sister!  I am raising my girls to do everything they can for themselves and ask for help when absolutely necessary. But, always try something before you say you can't do it.  Miss Puerta Rico turned the water works on and started saying that she couldn't do the challenge when they were showing the computerized video description.

My daughters would kick these girls butts! They kick mine in board games, card games and video games on a regular basis and I never cry...well almost never.
