Olympic Withdrawal

E-mail Print PDF

I am going through Olympic withdrawal. Thank God for Young and the Restless, otherwise I might have gone stir crazy yesterday afternoon looking for something to watch on television. (let’s not talk about how I could have been outside enjoying the nice weather;) For 16 days I was quite content to come home from work each day, park my butt on the couch, where I cheered on our Canadian athletes while watching the Games!

The last time I remember being so mesmerized by the Olympic Games was when I was 11 years old. It was the summer of 1984 when the Olympics were held in Los Angeles. This was also back when our family’s first VCR was relatively new, so we went crazy, and recorded everything from gymnastics to track and field to swimming. Thanks to the VCR I was able to enjoy the 1984 Summer Olympics for the next two years or so, and memorize the gymnastics routines of the U.S.’s Mary Lou Retton, or the call for any races our swimmers medaled in, like Alex Bauman, Victor Davis and Anne Ottenbrite.

When the dvd collections of the 2010 Winter Games start coming out, you can be sure I’ll be paying to keep those memories close at hand. I was so excited to be able to watch Alex Bilodeau win Canada’s first gold medal on home soil, and most of the other gold, silver and bronze medals our extremely dedicated and talented athletes won. Aside from the Canadian medalists, there were a number of Canadian athletes who didn’t medal, but whose performances were the best ever Olympic finishes for Canadians, particularly in the men’s biathlon and cross country skiing 50km event. And of course, I also watched Sidney Crosby score that wonderfully glorious goal that told Team U.S.A, without a doubt, whose game hockey really is!!

Congratulations to all Canadian athletes who took part in the 2010 Olympic Games!

Scary Stuff

E-mail Print PDF

I’ve recently become familiar with a very disturbing term, Pro Ana. I’m not sure if you’ve heard of this term before, but it refers to the promotion of anorexia nervosa as a lifestyle choice rather than an eating disorder (Wikipedia). Shocked yet? Read on...

Pro Ana sites have exploded on the internet, with thousands of web forums and social networking services devoted to anorexics. On such sites, members share diet techniques, have weight loss competitions, share ways to use laxatives and/or induce vomiting, and most disturbing to me, ways to HIDE weight loss from parents and doctors.

Doctors and others from the medical community have spoken out against Pro Ana groups, and I think it’s very important to spread the message further.

I encourage you to do some research of Pro Ana on your own. Find out what ‘thinspiration’ (or thinspo) is. Look at pictures. Read stories. Become educated.

Young people, especially girls who are insecure, naïve and have a poor self image are most vulnerable to what these sites have to offer. If you have a daughter, a sister, a niece, a granddaughter, a cousin, a student, or a friend…I urge you to talk to them once you’ve educated yourself. You could also take the steps to block such sites from your home computers.

Thanks….Lisa

Go Canada Go

I think I may have Olympic fever.  All of a sudden Manny Paradis (Manuel Osborne-Paradis)  Alexandre Bilodeau, Jessica Dube and Bryce Davison are names I'm fitting into everyday conversation. I was glued to the pre- opening ceremony coverage followed by the opening ceremonies and tuned into the action every day since. I watched the first Olympic gold ever won in Canada by a Canadian and hope we are on our way to a record.  The record is 24 medals at the 2006 games in Turin

Avatar

I may be the only person on the planet that has not seen Avatar. I’m told over and over again that it is a good movie… a great movie.  An avatar is a computer user's representation of himself/herself or alter ego, whether in the form of a three-dimensional model used in computer games,.. Maybe it’s a bad title for a good movie.  This from a guy who has never seen or read a Harry Potter book or movie.  Maybe I’ll crawl back under my rock.

Don't Sweat The Small Stuff

E-mail Print PDF

With the world’s attention focused primarily on Haiti right now, I think it’s an important time for us to remind ourselves not to sweat the small stuff.

Take time out of your day today and think about all of the things you are grateful for….good health or the health of a loved one, a home, a job, loving family and friends, great weather for winter sports (if you’re into that sort of thing J ), good food, and anything or anyone else that you are truly grateful for.

Now, the next time someone bumps into you on the street and doesn’t say ‘excuse me’, or if your parents ground you for poor grades, or if you can’t fit into that new dress because of the few extra pounds you put on over Christmas…stop and think about how much worse things could be for you before you complain.

Take a moment to think about the five year old boy that spent 9 days buried underneath the rubble of his home in Haiti before being rescued last night.  The poor little guy must have been absolutely terrified and unable to understand what was happening to him.  Or, think about the 2 million people who now have no place to live in an already impoverished nation, many who have lost loved ones to this disaster.

So today, when you’re ready to sweat the small stuff, remember that things in your life could be much, MUCH worse…and maybe send some positive energy out to the people of Haiti who really need it…positive energy goes a long way.  And, of course, if you are able to make a financial contribution to the Haiti relief effort, then that’s great too!

P.S…I plan on focusing on all of the positives in my life today too J
