Update on Formaldehyde Spill

Hits

There’s no change in the situation on Highway 63 as the clean up of formaldehyde continues after a deadly transport crash. Highway 63 is still closed between Lees Road and Four Mile Lake Road and could be closed through Wednesday. A detour has been set up using Four Mile Lake Road. Residents on Silver Lady Lane are still under a mandatory evacuation. The driver of the transport truck, 54-year-old Jocelyn Lahaie of Lavaltrie, Quebec, has died of his injuries from the collision that happened Monday morning. There’s no word on what caused the crash. As for the formaldehyde leak, The North Bay Parry Sound Health Unit says some did get into Trout Lake. Residents along One Mile Bay off of Silver Lady Lane who draw their water directly from the lake are advised not to use the water. Don’t consume it, give it to pets, or even enter the lake in that area. There’s no concern for North Bay’s water supply. Water testing has been stepped up, but it is safe. City water specialists and the Ministry of the Environment are monitoring the situation. North Bay’s City Engineer Alan Corell says the formaldehyde is not expected to get to the intake for the water plant. Various agencies have been on scene dealing with the spill and evacuation. In addition to emergency services, the Ministry of the Environment, Transport Canada, Canutec, City Water Specialists, Nipissing Health and Civilian Hazardous Material Companies have been on site.
