Crime Up in North Bay

E-mail Print PDF

Criminal activity is up in North Bay for the start of the year, but the deputy chief says we can’t draw conclusions after one month. January saw more sexual assaults, robberies, break enter and thefts and assaults over the same time a year ago. There were five sexual assaults in January compared to none at the same time last year. And break, enter and thefts saw 22 incidents as opposed to five last year in January. Al Williams says it’s too early to tell if there’s an upward trend in criminal activity.

North Bay police released their annual fraud report and it shows Internet fraud is on the rise. Of the 143 fraud claims police handled last year, 26 involved computer fraud. Deputy chief Al Williams says it’s a sign of the times and adds this type of crime will continue to rise. The major reason for that is because the perpetrators operate in different countries making it difficult to find them. Williams says the best way not to be victimized by Internet fraud is to ignore e-mails asking for personal information.

Industry minister Tony Clement says two NDP MPs are misleading the public about the future of FedNor. Clement says the members for Sault Ste. Marie and Nickel Belt claim he plans to close the FedNor office in Sudbury and move it to Toronto. Clement says this is not the case and accuses the NDP of playing political games. The minister says when he visited the Sudbury FedNor office last Friday, the employees thought he was there to fire them because of the rumours. Clement says the NDP are not behaving responsibly and adds despite the challenging times, it’s business as usual for FedNor in Northern Ontario.
