North Bay is officially asking the provincial government to reconsider one part of its budget. The Liberal budget plans to trim the Apprenticeship Training Tax Credit, but the municipality is worried it could negatively impact up to 100 new jobs. Call centres use the tax credit to help train new workers. There are currently about 600 call centre jobs in North Bay, and one facility wants to hire up to 100 more employees. However, without the tax credit those jobs may be in jeopardy. The mayor of North Bay hopes the province will reconsider the option.

The entire issue of banning smoking in city parks and public places has been brought to a standstill. A few weeks back, a majority of elected officials voted to ban puffing in parks. Normally the bylaw phase that follows is a mere formality, but last night a councillor reversed their position during the bylaw vote. Judy Koziol says she decided the ban was too far reaching. Her change of heart affected the dynamic, and the decision was overturned. That means there is no ban on smoking in parks or public places. Meanwhile, the Chamber of Commerce and the Health Unit are looking into a study of smoking on patios of commercial restaurants and bars.

Nipissing's MPP Vic Fedeli tells Moose FM news he's disappointed. The conservative says "disappointment" is the best word to describe how he's feeling today, now that the NDP have officially said that they'll support the Liberal budget. That means they will prop up the minority government for the time being. Fedeli says the Grits bought the New Democrats' support. Meanwhile, the NDP believe they made progress with their demands, and Liberals say they've avoided an unwanted election.

North Bay Police want you to watch for the latest internet scam. You get an unsolicited email, and the kicker is it claims to be from the Bank of Montreal Anti-Fraud department. Their trick is that they tell you to avoid fraud, by asking you to provide certain private information in an email. City police say they're had several local residents contact them over this, so be careful when you're online.
