The importance of natural dark skies will be celebrated in early June. On June 8th, the Muskoka Conservancy is presenting two events about dark skies. A talk about 'Darkness and Life' by Robert Dick from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada will happen at the Active Living Centre in Huntsville at 11:30am. It will be part of the Conservancy's Annual General Meeting and awards ceremony which the public can also attend - they start at 10am. In the evening, Dick will lead a guided star party at the Torrance Barrens. Telescopes will be available for use, but you should bring your own if you have one, as well as red flashlights and binoculars. Please wear suitable hiking footwear, and be prepared for bugs. The group will meet at the Torrance Barrens sign on Muskoka Road 13 at 9pm and go to the lower viewing area. Parking space is limited so you are urged to carpool. This event is suitable for all ages and entrance is by donation to the Muskoka Conservancy.

The 8th Annual Spin the Lakes Cycle Tour happens Friday and Saturday at Hidden Valley Resort.The Share the Road Cycling Coalition and GranFondo Canada are gearing up with a team of local organizers for this ride, which is the first of four planned this year. Events get underway with the "Family Fundo" Kids Ride at Hidden Valley at 5:30pm Friday. Admission for this event is free. Saturday ride options include 170k, 110k, 50k and 20k routes. The first starts at 8am. Lunch happens at 1:30pm. Parry sound-Muskoka MPP Norm Miller and Huntsville Mayor Claude Doughty be on hand to deliver remarks.

It pays to keep your vehicle's equipment up to date. On May 18th at 2:02am, police conducting general patrol on Great North Road in Parry Sound, saw a vehicle without a plate light. Police say the driver had been consuming alcohol before driving. The 61 year old Parry Sound man was charged with fail to notify about an address change; improper number plate light and Over 80. He'll appear in Parry Sound court June 13th.

The Parry Sound OPP Marine Unit was patrolling Lake Manitouwabing in McKellar Township this past weekend. They stopped a boat and found drug paraphernalia onboard. Three Brampton males were charged with possession of under 30 grams of cannabis. They'll appear in Parry Sound Court June 13th.

The OPP has a new partner to help speed up the process in finding missing or kidnapped children. Ontario’s AMBER Alert program has joined forces with OnStar. Central Region Media Relations Sergeant Peter Leon says OnStar will transfer Amber Alert data into its call center’s geographical mapping system. He says it will then share that information the OnStar’s more than 400,030 subscribers.

This partnership coincides with National Missing Children’s Day, happening this Saturday, which will focus on stranger abductions.
