March 17^th

"Get your Irish up" for Port Carling's annual St. Patrick's Day celebrations. Join the "hooley" and celebrate St. Patrick's Day in true Irish style with the freshest of traditional Irish food and oldest of drink. Taking place at the Port Carling Community Centre on Wednesday, March 17^th.Doors open at 5:00 pm and dinner served at 6:00 pm. Adults $15.00, children under 12 $6.00. March 19^th

A Benefit dance and silent auction will be held for a Port Sydney mechanic who lost his hands in a snowmobiling accident. After being exposed to minus 30 degree temperatures, Chris Annis' hands and toes had to be amputated. The dance and auction will be held Friday, March 19^th at the Huntsville Legion. A bank account for the family has also been set up at the Huntsville TD Canada Trust.

March 21^st

There will be Skijoring at Arrowhead Provincial Park on March 21^st from 10:00am-3:00pm. Skijoring is a sport which has its roots in Scandinavia, and simply constitutes any energetic dog pulling a cross-country skier! Don’t have the equipment? No problem! There will be some gear onsite to borrow and instruction on how to effectively ski and guide your dog. March 22^nd  

Have you ever considered being a foster family, or adopting a child into your home? Family Youth and Child Services invites you to find out what is involved to do so, and if you are able to open your heart and home to a child in need. Foster and adoptive parents are greatly needed in our area! There will be an information night on becoming a foster or adoptive parent on Monday, March 22nd at 7:00pm in Bracebridge. March 24^th

The Huntsville Lake of Bays Rotary Club proudly presents Captain Ray Wiss, M.D. author of ‘On the Front Lines in Afghanistan-A War Diary.’ His book gives a clear picture of why we are in Afghanistan and what our soldiers have accomplished. The event will take place at the Algonquin Theatre on March 24^th. Tickets are $20.00 and are available at the Theatre box office. Show starts at 7:30pm. All proceeds will help fund projects in our community and in countries of need.

‘The Paul Young Story: A Valued Life in My Community and the People First Movement’ will be held at the Algonquin Theatre on Wednesday, March 24^th. March 26^th, 27^th

There will be a community Give and Take on the weekend of March 26^th and 27^th. On Friday March 26^th from 1:00pm until 7:00pm drop off any items you think someone could use and you no longer have use for. Then on Saturday March 27^th from 9:00am until 2:00pm drop by at the corner of Taylor Rd and Cedar Lane in Bracebridge. The items can be dropped off at the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints.

 

March 27^th

The Port Carling Figure Skating Club will be having their annual Figure Skating Carnival on Saturday, March 27^th beginning at 6:30pm. Admission is by donation.    

 

March 27^th

There will be a Spaghetti Dinner at the Knox Presbyterian Church in Gravenhurst on Saturday March 27^th with 5:00pm and 6:30pm sittings. Tickets are just $8.00 for adults or $4.00 for kids age 4 to 8. All proceeds to the Knox Presbyterian Church. For tickets call Wendy at 687-3929.

 

End of April

Bracebridge Public School's grade 7 and 8 students are raising money for their class trip to Quebec and you can help. If you have any scrap metal laying around, drop it off for the BPS 7/8 metal drive. Scrap metal can be dropped off at Bracebridge Machine and Mechanical located on EP Lee Drive. The drive runs until the end of April.

 

April 3^rd

On Saturday, April 3^rd it's the 10th Annual Bala and District Lioness Easter Bazaar and Flea Market. The event begins at 9:00am and goes until 3:00 pm at the Bala Community Centre. April 10^th

The Elderberries Choir will be presenting their 3^rd concert of the year on April 10^th at 7:30pm at the Gravenhurst Legion. Individual tables, dimly lit room, refreshments, cash bar and a Silent Auction will make for an enjoyable evening of music and fun.  Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.  We will be selling only 125 tickets for this great event, so get your tickets early.  For further information contact any choir member or Jim at 687-2048 for home ticket delivery.

Ongoing in the Community

Coop and Glenn are back with the return of the Dads ‘n Kids program. It will run Monday evenings at Huntsville’s Chaffey Hall from Monday, February 1st to March 29th(except for Feb 15th  & March 15th).  The program will be offered to Dads and other “special big guys” and their kids (age 0 to 6) from 5:00 until 7:00 pm. Dinner is included so please call Muskoka Family Focus before noon the day of the program to register at 645-3027. Best Start

Muskoka Family Focus has received Best Start funding to run the Muskoka Falls and BPS Dinner programs. They will be open for families from 5:00 to 7:30 who have a child between 0 and 6 – older siblings welcome. BPS dinners will be held by Sue and Glenn on Tuesdays, March 2nd, 9th, 23rd & 30th, April 6th, 13, 20th & 27th (closed during March Break) Call 645-2229 to register. Young women in Muskoka living with Cancer can now join a new support group. Women 18 to 45 are able to share in the experience of their own personal journey, in a supportive and non-judgmental, environment. Bracebridge Out of the Cold Community Dinners are starting up again! The first dinner of the winter season will be Sunday, November 15^th at Knox Presbyterian Church. This season they will be offering free confidential nutritious meals three nights a week.  Doors open at 5:30pm and dinner is served around 6:00pm.  Dinners will be held Sunday nights at Knox Presbyterian Church Bracebridge, Tuesday nights at Bracebridge United Church and Wednesdays at St Joseph's Catholic Church Bracebridge. The Muskoka Photography Club meets every third Wednesday of the month. Meetings are downstairs  at the Raymond Community Centre between 7:00 – 9:00pm. The gathering consists of reviewing one or two photos from attending members and then a discussion/learning session on various camera topics and/or photographic computer programs.  The meeting is hosted by Paul Bennett, one of Muskoka’s renowned photographers.  There is no charge or fees to attend. All levels of photographers are welcome to join. 

 

The "Getting Ready for Baby" series of classes consists of three 2-hour sessions before baby arrives and one 2-hour session after baby is here. This series is available for expectant parents during the last 3 months of pregnancy. At the "Getting Ready for Baby" series you will learn about:

-Nurturing your baby

-Keeping your baby safe

-Feeding your baby

-Becoming a parent

-What life will be like with baby in the first few weeks

Muskoka O.S.P.C.A in Bracebridge is looking for volunteers to help take care of animals in the shelter. If you can spare a few hours a week the O.S.P.C.A needs volunteers to help with pet walking, dishes, laundry or cleaning kennels.  From 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Monday to Saturday. Good quality dog and cat canned food, or monetary donations are always welcome. With so many animals and so few staff, the O.S.P.C.A. needs your help. Call 645 6225. Or stop in, 4 Ferrier road, just off Cedar Lane. 

 

Feed the Manna Food Bank and Drive Hunger Away. The Food Bank currently needs non-perishable food items- Items Needed: Canned: fish, fruit, juice, meat, milk, pasta and pasta sauce, vegetables   -   rice crackers, cereal    -     White sugar, flour    -    Macaroni and cheese    -    powdered milk    -    peanut butter, jam

 

The Muskoka Tourette Syndrome Support Group meets the first Tuesday of the Month at Muskoka Falls Public School from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Individuals with TS, family members, educators, and interested community members are welcome to attend the meetings. Second Thursday of the Month

A Breast cancer support group meets on the second Thursday of each month from 7:00pm-9:00pm at Pinegrove Fellowship Baptist Church at Pine Street and Taylor Road, in Bracebridge. The next meeting is on October 8th, and then on November 12th. Please note that the December meeting will be on the first Thursday of the month, December 3^rd. Immunizations are the best way to protect yourself from preventable diseases such as measles, pertussis (whooping cough) and tetanus. The Simcoe Muskoka District Health unit provides regular immunization clinics at all office locations for infants through to seniors.
